The article explains Nabtesco’s dominance in RV reducer gearboxes due to its high precision and reliability, while noting that the industry has few suppliers because of extreme manufacturing difficulty. It also briefly mentions competitors like Sumitomo, Spinea, and HONPINE offering cost and delivery advantages.
The origin of the precision RV™ reducer dates back to 1980, when Nabtesco developed travel motors for hydraulic excavators. Unlike conventional planetary reduction systems, this was an entirely new reduction mechanism.

Designed to withstand the harsh working environments of construction machinery, the mechanism focused heavily on durability. Through the meshing of the internal teeth of pin gears and the external teeth of cycloidal gears, Nabtesco created an eccentric oscillating reduction mechanism with multiple simultaneous tooth engagements and excellent shock resistance.
At the same time, Japan’s robot industry was experiencing rapid growth during the so-called “First Year of Robot Popularization.” However, technical challenges quickly emerged alongside the rapid industrial expansion. For example:
Collisions during robot teaching frequently damaged reducers
Vibrations generated during robot operation needed to be minimized
Higher performance was increasingly demanded from reducers as critical mechanical components
To solve these problems faced by industrial robots, Nabtesco began developing this highly shock-resistant mechanism into a precision reducer.
Industrial robots require extremely high positioning accuracy, making backlash reduction and vibration suppression top priorities. Since reducers rely on gear transmission structures, achieving high precision was extremely difficult. However, in 1985, by adopting a multi-crankshaft design, Nabtesco successfully achieved high precision development, leading to the birth of the precision RV™ reducer.
Later, to improve robot assembly efficiency and achieve more compact structures, Nabtesco successively developed:
RV™-A series with integrated main bearings
RV™-C hollow shaft series
Subsequently, alongside the high-precision RV™ series, Nabtesco also developed the GH-P/S series, designed for rotational speeds exceeding three times that of conventional reducers.
Starting in 2002, to further reduce assembly time, Nabtesco began developing gearhead products based on the RV™ platform. With customer requirements and evolving market trends in mind, Nabtesco continuously expanded its product lineup.
Nabtesco is a Japanese company specializing in the research and manufacturing of {tag-107900}s. Established in 2003, the company now holds over 60% of the global industrial robot RV reducer market.
By applying mature technologies to its compact RVmini™ precision reducers, Nabtesco achieved:
High precision (backlash below 1 arc-minute)
High rigidity and overload resistance
Compact structures (maximum outer diameter only 80–142 mm)
These products are widely used in:
Semiconductor equipment
Precision transmission systems
Its Changzhou production base generated RMB 583 million in output value in 2024. Product quality and performance remain consistent with Japanese-made products and have passed China CR certification.
In 2025, Nabtesco spun off its hydraulic business into a subsidiary named Comtesco, while its core precision reducer business continued operating independently.
To solve various customer challenges, Nabtesco has always emphasized both “product export” and “market entry.” The company believes that its expertise should not only provide reducers as mechanical components, but also complete reducer solutions tailored to customer needs.
Nabtesco continuously explores not only existing customer issues, but also hidden market demands.
For customers struggling with difficult design processes and assembly failures, Nabtesco developed compact ALL-in-ONE actuators integrating precision RV™ reducers with servo motors under the concept of “simple design and easy assembly.”
To further reduce design, manufacturing, and assembly time, the company also expanded its gearhead product lineup.
Moving forward, Nabtesco plans to continue addressing automation and labor-saving demands with high-precision, high-output RV™ reducers and integrated actuator solutions.
In Q1 2026, Nabtesco reported revenue of JPY 83.032 billion, representing significant year-on-year growth.
Its precision reducer business achieved an additional JPY 4.8 billion in revenue, benefiting from the recovery of the automotive and semiconductor industries.
Its flagship RV-N and RV-C series continue to dominate the global large and medium-sized industrial robot joint reducer market with approximately 60% market share.
Capacity utilization rates reached:
75% at the Tsu Plant in Japan
90% at the Changzhou Plant in China
RV reducers require extremely high dimensional tolerances and positional accuracy. Among all components, the most difficult parts to manufacture are:
Cycloidal gears
Crankshafts
Pin gear housings
Crankshaft bearing holes and external tooth profiles are extremely difficult to machine.
The bearing holes and intermediate process holes require:
Tight diameter tolerances
Precise positional accuracy
Strict perpendicularity
This also places very high precision requirements on manufacturing fixtures.
Cycloidal gears require micron-level manufacturing precision.
Because cycloidal gears are thin and structurally complex, severe warping deformation easily occurs after heat treatment. Conventional surface grinding processes cannot properly finish both end faces.
Manufacturers must:
Perform thermodynamic simulations during heat treatment
Carefully control grinding allowances
Effectively minimize thermal deformation
Additionally, during actual RV reducer transmission, a certain amount of clearance between cycloidal teeth and pin gear teeth is necessary to:
Compensate manufacturing errors
Facilitate assembly/disassembly
Ensure proper lubrication
Therefore, standard tooth profiles cannot be directly adopted. Tooth profile modifications are mandatory.
Typical cycloidal gear modification methods include:
Equidistant modification
Shift modification
Angular modification
These methods may also be combined:
Negative equidistant + negative shift improves lubrication and reduces transmission error
Negative equidistant + positive shift improves contact stress distribution and load conditions
Proper selection of modification methods is critical.
The equipment required for RV reducer manufacturing is extraordinarily expensive.
For example:
MÄGERLE surface grinding machines can cost nearly RMB 10 million each
Without sufficient production volume, equipment depreciation costs become prohibitively high.

Sumitomo Drive Technology
Sumitomo is the second major player after Nabtesco and is also a Japanese company.
Current market share: approximately 5%.
Leveraging over a century of precision manufacturing expertise, its products feature:
High rigidity
Low backlash
Long service life
Applications include:
Industrial robots
Machine tools
Semiconductor equipment
Spinea is a Slovak company acquired by Timken in 2022, significantly improving its delivery capabilities.
Its products are widely used in:
High-end machine tools
Six-axis robots
Typical customers include:
KUKA
ABB
HONPINE began manufacturing RV reducers in 2018.
Similar to its harmonic reducers, HONPINE combines Japanese technology concepts with integrated actuator design philosophy.
Currently, HONPINE servo RV reducers have achieved strong market penetration in China. Starting in 2024, the company began promoting its products globally, and by 2025, products had entered testing and application stages in multiple countries, receiving positive feedback from more than a dozen industrial equipment manufacturers.
When purchasing RV reducers, Nabtesco remains one of the most reliable choices due to its extensive global market validation and long-term industry reputation.
However, emerging manufacturers such as HONPINE now offer performance parameters comparable to Nabtesco while benefiting from China’s highly complete supply chain ecosystem.
As a result, HONPINE can often provide:
Faster delivery
Better cost performance
More flexible supply capabilities
