Features
A DD motor (direct-drive motor) with a brake refers to a direct-drive motor equipped with a mechanical brake integrated into the motor or mounted at the rear of the motor. The brake is used to prevent the load from slipping, falling, or shifting due to its own weight or external forces during power loss, shutdown, or operation with a vertical-axis load.
It enables high-precision rotary actuators to not only achieve precise motion, but also reliably hold the load during stopping, power-off conditions, or specific safety states. A brake is not exclusive to any particular transmission structure. Instead, it is becoming a common requirement for high-precision motion systems that need reliable position holding and safe stopping.
The core principle of a DD motor is to drive the load directly with the motor, rather than using a conventional reducer to reduce speed and increase torque. Without a reducer to amplify torque, the motor itself must provide sufficient output torque while also meeting requirements for smooth low-speed operation, fast response, high torque density, low torque ripple, precise position control, effective thermal management, encoder compatibility, and proper matching with the mechanical load inertia.
Frameless torque motors provide an ideal foundation for this type of integrated motion system.
