Metal-cutting machine tool output reached 80,000 units in September 2026, up 12.5% year on year, according to data released by the National Bureau of Statistics on October 19. Production for January–September totaled 670,000 units, an increase of 10.1% from the same period a year earlier.
September’s year-on-year growth rate exceeded the cumulative rate for the first nine months, indicating a stronger annual comparison for the latest month. Both figures point to expanding production, although they do not establish whether output increased from August or whether growth accelerated consistently throughout the year.
Industrial robot production also rose, reaching 96,752 sets in September, up 18.9% year on year. Meanwhile, value-added industrial output among enterprises above the designated size increased by 5.5%. The machine tool and robot figures show growth in equipment production, but their unit-based output measures are not directly comparable with the broader value-added indicator. Nor does the machine tool total identify how much production consisted of higher-end equipment.
For the machine tool supply chain, sustained production growth could translate into greater demand for components and assembly capacity. The commercial impact would depend on whether shipments and customer orders keep pace with manufacturing output. Production volumes alone do not establish stronger equipment purchases, higher selling prices or improved profitability.
Subsequent output releases will help show whether September’s growth persists. Order, delivery and inventory information would provide a clearer view of how closely increased production aligns with customer demand.
