Nabtesco RV, Harmonic Drive, and WITTENSTEIN have each established proven transmission solutions for robotics, machine tools, automation, and precision motion control. However, applications requiring both arc-second-level positioning and high mechanical rigidity can expose different trade-offs between backlash, torsional stiffness, load capacity, and transmission accuracy. This has created growing interest in a backlash-free planetary actuator that combines the rigidity and torque density of planetary transmission with advanced backlash compensation. In this article, we compare the characteristics of Nabtesco RV, Harmonic Drive, and WITTENSTEIN precision planetary gearboxes, and examine where a backlash-free planetary actuator can provide an alternative solution.

In SCARA robots, 3C automation equipment, and precision assembly systems, harmonic drive gearboxes have become the preferred transmission solution thanks to their high precision, near-zero backlash, high reduction ratios, and compact design. When selecting a gearbox, engineers typically focus on parameters such as rated torque, reduction ratio, backlash, and torsional rigidity. However, one critical specification that is often overlooked is startup torque.

This article will provide a comprehensive analysis of harmonic drive gearboxes, including their introduction, advantages and disadvantages, backlash, application scenarios, and installation precautions.
